Your voice matters in advocating for better working conditions and wellbeing support for school leaders.

Dear SSASA friends,

The 2026 Australian Principal Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Survey is currently open, but with only 200 school leaders participating nationally so far, we need to encourage greater participation to ensure our experiences and challenges are adequately represented.

SSASA draws on the findings of this annual survey to advocate for improved working conditions, greater recognition of the complexities of school leadership, and the support needed to ensure a sustainable and rewarding leadership profession. The stronger the participation, the more compelling the evidence we can use to influence policy and advocate for meaningful change.

The survey is open to all school leaders, not just principals, and participants receive an individualised report providing insights into their own occupational health and wellbeing, with the opportunity to track changes over time.

The survey takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and closes in November.

I appreciate that 45 minutes is a significant commitment in already incredibly busy schedules, but the evidence gathered through this survey is invaluable in strengthening SASPA’s advocacy for better support for school leaders. As you know, DfE uses its Staff Wellbeing Survey to assess how effectively it is supporting staff. This national survey focuses specifically on school leaders, uses different measures and provides longitudinal data that allows us to track trends over time. This is particularly valuable in our advocacy. While it is true that South Australia is performing better than some other jurisdictions and has made improvements, neither takes away the complexity of school leadership or the need for greater support. The longitudinal evidence helps us demonstrate that improvement does not necessarily mean that current conditions are adequate or sustainable, and strengthens our case for further action.

Every response contributes to a stronger collective voice and a more compelling case for the support school leaders need and deserve.

Thank you for considering participating.
